Speciality Cosmetic Silicone Surfactants And Emulsifiers

PEG- and PPG-modified silicones serve as the emulsifiers, wetting agents, and surface tension modifiers in modern personal care formulations. Our surfactant family includes water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsifiers, BIS-PEG silicones, and cetyl PEG/PPG variants — developed for stability across cosmetic systems.

The Chemistry

Silicone surfactants are amphiphilic molecules: one end of the structure is a polysiloxane backbone (hydrophobic), and the other carries polyethylene glycol (PEG) or polypropylene glycol (PPG) side chains (hydrophilic). This architecture allows them to orient at oil-water interfaces and reduce surface tension — the fundamental requirement for emulsification. The silicone backbone's flexibility and low surface energy give silicone surfactants advantages over conventional organic emulsifiers: better skin feel in the finished emulsion, greater compatibility with silicone oil phases, and often improved emulsion stability at lower use levels. The PEG/PPG chain length and the ratio of silicone to glycol units determine HLB value and emulsion type — enabling formulators to tune the emulsifier to either water-in-oil or oil-in-water systems.
