Speciality Cosmetic Rheology And Texture Modifiers

Rheology modifiers control how a formulation flows, suspends, and behaves under shear. Our family — built on stearalkonium-modified bentonite chemistries dispersed in isododecane and silicone — provides pigment suspension, viscosity control, and texture for color cosmetics, sunscreens, and longwear formulations.

The Chemistry

The rheology modifiers in this family are organomodified clay minerals — smectite clays (bentonite, hectorite) whose surface has been treated with quaternary ammonium compounds (stearalkonium chloride) to convert them from hydrophilic to organophilic. The treated clay disperses in non-polar solvents (isododecane, silicone fluids) to form thixotropic gels — viscous at rest, but thinning under shear. This behavior is critical for color cosmetics and sunscreens: the product needs high viscosity to suspend pigments and UV filters uniformly in the package, but must flow easily during application. The activation chemistry matters: most NISHKA rheology modifiers require activation with polar propylene carbonate or ethanol to initiate gelation in the non-polar carrier system.
